Because the guy who wrote "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" was IN CLASS at the time, bored - so he thought he'd write a song. The trouble was, they were singing that stupid ABC song at the time. Thanks for the chuckle - fun question. :-)

i just noticed that lol, i have no idea. Maybe it has something to do with it being easier for little kids to remember the same tune, instead of two separate.
