What is it supposed to be?
or
What is it in reality?

It should be a fair, unbiased, equal source of factual information regarding the candidates.

In reality it seems to be more of a mouthpiece for the candidates that are endorsed by those that pay the bills, have the most money, own the news company, etc.

For example consider Rudy's conflict of interests:

I scanned a few answers and see that the neocons are still having trouble admitting that they lost, fair and square. The media did many more negative presentations on McCain, but that was mostly because gaffes are news and McCain's Republican handlers left him open to it. If you want to blame someone, blame Karl Rove and the folk like him. That is where the loss truly lies. Even the so-called "unbiased' media has little in the way of testosterone these days -- If Nixon had done half the stuff Bush pulled, he would have been crucified, grilled, turned, and garnished before being served up to the impeachment process. And just to keep the media docile the neocons claim it is all left-leaning. And they've been doing it so long, that they believ their own lies. Sarah Palin of course was media worthy in her own right and a lot of the reports dubbed 'negative on McCain' were features on her. Once again, the Republican strategists were asking her to act as something she was not, so the blame still rests with them.

Media's role during an election is very sensitive. It can do and undo a candidate. It wields enough power to put down a candidate it deems as undeserving or undesirable just as it can make a candidate appear strong and dependable.
