What happens to the computer, in terms of both hardware and software, in the event of an abrupt power failure. I would like to know the probabilities of damage.

Most of the the time it is the software rather than the hardware that gets messed up.

BUT repairing Win XP is easy:

I have encountered power outtage due to a faulty iron for about 6 times but each time I turned on my computer without any problems. It just restarted as usual without any error or computer fault reports. . Once I purposely turned it off abruptly because of virus infection (the virus wouldn't let me turn off the computer). Then I restarted the computer in safe mode and did a system restore and everything was back to normal. I have also done this before for a friend whose laptop was infected by a virus and now her laptop is still in good working condition. Hers was a Samsung laptop. Mine is a Packard Bell desktop (2002). Mine is XP Home. Hers is XP Pro. So .. My conclusion is that, so long as your computer has a stable and original operating systems and regularly updated, it should continue to work fine in spite of electrical outtage. Just that work that you were working on at that time will not be saved. .. I heard from a friend that her desktop computer didn't start smoothly after an electrical outtage. Hers was a built up computer with Windows ME and had never been updated.

The operating system doesn't shut down properly any open applications are not shut correctly. Data may be lost and system errors may occur. With regards the hardware it is possible a power surge on power failure may damage components. That's why it's always worth plugging any PC into a surge protected extension block and why servers should always have a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) to prevent sudden outages.

If your pc's PSU constantly turns off, i suggest replacing it. I'm assuming, but i think the hardware would suvive the ordeal, but the software may eventualy become corrupt. Hope you fix it.
