Hockey used to be the only sport in which the sub-continental or South Asian countries like India and Pakistan excelled. In all other disciplines e.g. soccer, athletics, swimming, boxing etc. the South Asian sportsmen and women were nowhere near the international standards. Slowly other teams picked up their skills in Hockey and edged out India and Pakistan from the top rung of the game.
Cricket, in which India and other South Asian countries ranked at the bottom of the pile slowly became the game where they improved considerably to challenge the leaders. The cricket craze in South Asia in general and India in particular shot up after India's World Cup victory in 1983. Pakistan and Sri Lanka repeated the feat later. Cricket thereafter established itself permanently as the number one sport in this part of the world. Bangladesh started to play cricket at the top/international level much later. Yet cricket has edged out soccer as the most popular sport in Bangladesh in a very short time. Many big soccer stadiums in Bangladesh have made way for cricket.
The World Cup expectedly raised the hype in cricket. India's poor show and early exit demoralised the entire nation. Reactions ranged from attacks on players' homes to rallies denouncing the team and coach. It even made way to Parliament for a discussion. It was nearly the same story for Pakistan, another early loser. Bangladesh on the other hand scored famous victories which really rejuvenated the morale of a poor country. All hopes were pinned on Sri Lanka who reached the finals and lost.

Yes. Cricket is an obsessionfor South Asian countries especially in India as the players are given celebrity status when they play well and abused when they they fail to play well. Whenever Indian cricket team fails in a tournament or series Indian players are subjectto lot of abuse by the Publikc. There have been cases where the effigy of playerswere burnt and their houses and establishments were damaged.
