Mental pain... physical pain can be ignored and resolved with as little as a pill or shot or trip to the doc, but mental pain is anguish that demands attention and, if I may say, may require way more drugs to erase, or at least forget about for a while, than a broken leg, per se.

Not that I 'm advocating drug use, but heck I can understand the temptation. ;)

You forgot a level--emotional pain.

Irrespective of the level the "pain" exists on, whether it is or isn't "the worst" depends on what level your consciousness resides upon/in; and whether you are able to move your consciousness from one plane to another.

For instance, if you are experiencing pain on the physical level, a way to eleviate it would be to move your 'consciousness' or 'attention' to another plane (mental or emotional--or higher), OR you could use "attrition" to 'tune it out'.

While I understand the concept, I will be the FIRST to admit that this is VERY difficult to do and takes a LOT of practices. Can I do it? Nope. Are there those that I know that can? Yes. I'm just a beginner in all this.

Ever ask yourself or wonder what exactly causes pain?

Generally speaking, "pain" is supposedly caused by "resistance" or "fear".

Since the question was not about what causes pain, I shall not write any further, and simply will refer you to the teachings of the spirituial teacher and author Joseph J. Dewey. See the below "source" URL.

I have had both. The thing with physical pain is that eventually it is gone and nearly forgotten. Mental pain is harder to get over. It can take on a life of it's own. it can grow in to emotional pain that can take over a person's life. It can take away a persons self esteem, it can destroy dreams & hopes.
It can be like a cancer that eats away at anything in it's past.
It can make a person give up.....lose hope, give in, and check out.

But, the important thing is that the mind can reprogram it's self. New tapes on positive notes can be rewritten. There can be choices to not let that pain rule and destroy. It is possible to move on. it is indeed painful, but it is possible.
I don't think it can ever be forgotten, but it can with time lose its power over our hearts and minds.

Your body can mend most physical pain but mental pain scars the brain and, sometimes, can never be healed.
