Those people work a 5 day work week, Monday - Friday. The middle of the week would be the hump, as in going uphill Monday and tuesday and downhill Thursday and Friday. So half way thru Wednesday would be over the hill or hump and on your way to the weekend.
It has also been called PONR or Point of No Return by piolets due to the fact that you are more than 1/2 there and it is cheaper (fuel) to continue where you are going than to turn around.

Wednesday is the middle of the week.
The "hump" refers to heading toward the weekend.
Monday and Tuesday you are going up the hill.
Wednesday you are on the "hump" or top of the hill, so after work on a Wednesday, people say they are "over the hump".
Thursday and Friday you are coasting down the hill to the weekend.

Because a hump is like a hill ...... the first 2 days of a work week are climbing the hill.... the middle is the summit ... and it's all downhill from there.

ok.well.some people call wednesday the "hump" day because:
monday; you just come back from the wkend
tuesday; the wkend was only just a 2 days ago,your still fresh
wednesday; the middle day,you cant go forwars,you cant go back.the days equal the same,2.
thursday; you think "tomorrow is friday"
friday; YAY! weekend
saturday; weekend
sunday; weekend

its not referring to 'hump' as in pyhsically humping something. its used to show that wedenesday is in the middle of the five day week, two days before, two days after it. think of it as a camel hump, thats how i picture it
