The log. of a number to a given base is the power to which the base must be raised to give the number.
Example1
100 = 10²
number = 100
base = 10
power = 2
log base10 (100) = 2

Example 2
8 = 2³
number = 8
base = 2
power = 3
log base 2 (8) = 3

Hope these examples help.

Logarithms are used because they are the inverse process of exponentials. For instance,

2^x = 4

This is equivalent to the following statement:

x = log[base 2](4)

"2 to the what power is 4" is what x should yield.
