to make it-
take a magnetisable material
1. heat it till it bcomes red and place it in magnetic north - south direction and hammer it
2. passing current thru a coil wound around it(electromagnetisation)
3.use the same pole of another permanet magnet to slide it over the substance to be magnetised, in the same direction, several times....
METHODS OF DEMAGNETISATION (destroyin it):
1. throw it on the ground with force several times
2. heat it to v. high temperatures

1.. You can make a magnet from an iron rod by continually dropping the rod on the same end onto an anvil, this will line up the many small magnets that are in the iron. 2..You can coil a wire around the rod and connect the ends of the wire to a voltage source, this will create an electo magnet. 3..You can stroke an iron rod with a strong permanent magnet, this will also cause the small magnets in the rod to line. 1..An electro magnet will be ruined when you disconnect the power. 2..Use a permanent magnet as a hammer driving nails with the middle of the magnet.

As mentioned by some other answerers, cooling a heated magnetisable material in the earth's magnetic field, rubbing with a permanent magnet and keeping in a current carrying coil are the three methods for making a magnetisable material into a permanent magnet.
To destroy a magnet (making them non-magnetic, not physically destroying), we can use demagnetising coils and or heat.
