Capone was Neapolitan and Sicilan ( His mother was born in Salerno) He was known as a gangster, mobster and the head of the Mafia, aka Costra Nostra.

Yes altho of people believe that the mob and the Mafia are one in the same but they are not. Now it can be a little confusing but let me put it this way Al Capone was the head of a large Mafia family and he chose to be a mobster. You can be in the mafia with out being a mobster. but you cannot be a mobster with out being in the mafia. Mob is just a Classification of a type of mafia individual. It explains what that person does in there organization. Like the speaker in the PTA and the person who brings the snacks.

Then Mafia is a 'cladestine' organization - - - mob is a generic term hence Al Capone was a Mobster and a member of the Mafia. In fact Capone was the head of the Chicago Mafia. An easy anology is that both George W and Hillary C are Politicians but Geo W is a Republican and Hilary is a Democrat.

""Al Capone became head of the Chicago mafia after Torrio was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt and stepped down from the head spot in 1925. Throughout his reign he ran the streets of Chicago with his mob. When his mob with at its prime, Capone had city aldermen, mayors, legislators, governors, congressmen, and over half the Chicago police force on his payroll.""

Capone was a Neapolitan, not a Sicilian, so he could not technically have been part of the Mafia. The Chicago he moved to was being fought over by various alliances of ethnic-group gangsters: Neapolitans, Sicilians, Irishmen and Jews.

Neapolitan gangsters had surfaced early in the last century under the title of "mano nera," but bothered only their own kind. As Capone was at war with anyone who opposed his domination of the rackets in Chicago, the only appropriate term is "mob".

The Mafia and the mob are one and the same. A mob is simply a general term for a disorderly crowd.

Since he wasn't Sicilian, we was not allowed into the Mafia as a part of the families in New York and other cities. His organized crime syndicate, however, was characterized as part of the 'mob' or 'Chicago Outfit'
