I'm in the San Francisco area, but I could make it all the way to San Diego or up to Mt. Shasta or something. I was thinking of going to Big Sur--- is it really busy on the weekend in summer???? I don't want to go anywhere too HOT.

It depends on what you want to do the most and what you prefer. Going north of San Francisco to Mt. Shasta or elsewhere is more of an outdoors type trip. There are not any major cities north of SF so if you like camping, hiking, boating, and outdoor acivities then the Mt. Shasta area is great for that. Lot's of lakes, mountains, and scenic views up there.

If you go south to SD it's more of a beach and city scene down in Southern CA. The drive down the coast is great too and you see some beautiful scenery as it changes from north to south. You can also go to Big Sur on your way down to San Diego. And SD is a great city to visit this time of year; great weather and the warmest beaches in CA. Once you get past Santa Barbara Southern CA becomes very urban along the coast all the way down to San Diego. There are tons of things to do and see along the way.

As long as you stay near the coast it won't get too hot, inland parts of CA are very hot this time of year.

For nature head north, for beaches and cities head south.

Big Sur is nice but so is Big Basin in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Depending on where you want to go. Santa Cruz, Carmel and Monterrey are great beach cities to visit and are about 2-3 hours from San Francisco (depending which route you take). Up north is Bodega Bay and Point Reyes. Both excellent beaches and you can go horseback riding. All the beaches in Northern California are pretty cool weather wise. you could probably wear shorts and a t-shirt but bring a sweatshirt or light jacket. You could go take a canoe down the Russian River. The section near Forestville is a nice 3-4 hour casual paddling experience. It's not too hot for that right now. Napa and Sonoma to the North has great wineries and most are open to wine tasting and winery tours on the weekend. If you like to hike, Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County is nice. Mt. Diablo in Contra Costa County is good too.

There's plenty to do in San Francisco too. You have Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, China Town and shopping districts like union Square and the Haight. If you like night clubs, there are plenty along Broadway, in the Marina and SOMA districts.

Don't even get me started on food...there are way too many places that have great food. Well hope you have fun while you're here...if you have any questions about anything here, feel free to email me.

It is warm these past few days. Maybe take a ride down the coast past Big Sur to Morro Bay, or further. You'll probably find it cooler there.

Go wine tasting along the Central Coast of California. There are lots of great wineries and beautiful scenery.

Don't come to Napa! It's hotter than he** here right now. 100 degree days. I'm miserable with this heat. And I'm used to midwest temps and humidity!

Skinny dip in the day - any river, pool or pond will do! Party at nite.
