I have to get mired in trivialities every now and then just to stay sane. Reality right now sucks.

1. Cancel your cable subscription and resist the temptation to buy your TV rabbit ears. I did the former, but I succumbed to the latter and still watch public television once and a while. Ok, I also watch the Simpsons and Family Guy.
2. Implicit in #1 is your freedom from trivial materialisms in the form of commercials and advertisements, which more often than not are trying to sell you things you don't need and create services that enslave you.
3. Read good books. Take a break and read a bestseller if you must (but check it out from the library), and really attempt to own your mind. It's yours. There's no need to lease it to the mediocrity of reality television, the banality of text messaging, or the cull of crappy music and movies (90% of which today are remakes of better films).
4. But #1-3 are not going to whisk you away to your own private happiness. Some days, you'll have to go to work and listen as your colleagues discuss American Idol or Oprah's latest sap-fest. Cherish the people and not their inanities.
5. Find some task you can slowly accomplish. Whether it's reading the collected works of Shakespeare and studying the Renaissance or learning how to drywall, do something for you. I don't know what else to say.

For years I was an investigator, first in the military, then for the government and then in the private sector and one thing I quickly learned is how much truth is revealed in all of these so-called trivialities you detest.
Most people, by the time they've reached young adulthood, have created a public persona and seldom does this public persona reflect the true nature, or provide the complete picture, of the person. By learning to closely study the small, often unaware and unconscious 'trivialities' of a person we can have a better idea of the complete, real person behind the facade.
The downside to acquiring this insight is that it usually only makes boring people seem that much more boring.
The upside, of course, is that it makes interesting people and events all that more interesting.
As much reality (truth) can be found in trivialities as can be found in grand public gestures.

Yes I am mired with trivialties that obscure reality. But, I am working on changing that. I need to feel the pain and betrayl then I need to reprogram my brain to a more positive tape that plays over in my brain.
The escape is a choice. Sometimes the choice isn't possible. But, the human spirit can and has overcome the worse of circumstances. it is a choice. It is as simple as that.

It would be nice if I could see past all the fog every now and then and determine, in the search for truth, what is essential and what is not.
I mean, J.K. Rowling is such a fabulous writer that I don't know whether Harry Potter will live or die!

Reality - what a concept. My best advice for you comes from the late John Belushi in the classic film Animal House - Drink Heavily. Pax- C

Actually, I find the grand realities to prevent me from experiencing the interesting trivialities.
I hate it when that happens...

You write much but say little, grasshopper.
Let me edit your question for you:
"Are you neurotic?"
Yes, you are. Join the club, and enjoy it instead of making it sound so miserable.
