Because even though the East plays defense, they lack the offense to win games. The Spurs are able to capitalize by getting the best of both worlds, shut down the opposing team and score a bunch of points on them in a hurry. I don't think the East are the only ones playing defense these days nor are the West, the only ones with a fast pace offense.
