I live in Sugar Land , outskirt of Houston. I was born in Houston and raised in Sugar Land, went to college in Malibu, graduated and moved back here. And i dread this state so so so much. Living is cheap here, and there are Pro's and Con's ... Pro's: you get to eat and drink alot (which is why Houston has so many fat people, unlike Sugar Land though, because we work out and strive to look good *named Fittest City in Texas*) Con's: Since living is so cheap, alot of thugs come to houston, so first class is mixed in with peasant class. I wouldn't recommend living in Houston, it's always chaotic and never stops feeling congested even when it's not. and the roads are terrible. Sugar Land is nice, new and classy. The landscapes are always well maintained, tons of lake, and people drive the speed limit, so life is less chaotic, life in the slow lane i suppose. And it's only 15 minutes away from Uptown houston. There is great food wherever you go and and people are friendly. Men and boys still open doors for women and girls here. Another great place to look into is The Woodlands, about 30 mins north of downtown Houston. It nice there, the buld homes and shops around huge trees instead of tearing them down. It's actually gorgeous there when the sun sets.

I love it here. Traffic isn't so great, but that really depends on where you're living and where you're driving to. Where I live there's absolutely no traffic to and from work (unless there's a wreck or something) It's got its ups and downs just like any other city. There's great food here. Being one of the fattest cities in the nation, there would have to be great food. Rent is definatly cheaper here than in California and New York. Galveston bay is less than a hour away (although I don't really like going into the water). I wouldn't want to live inside Loop 610 because of the traffic and busy life styles. I live north of Houston, about 25-30 miles from downtown. I love going downtown to watch the Astros or to catch a concert. It's definately a great city to live in but it really depends on what you're moving for (ie: work, school, family) and what part of Houston you're moving to. If you're moving just for the sake of change......you should probably stay in Houston for a week or two before you set your heart on staying.

I think you would prefer to go somewhere like Oregon or Washington. I am originally from the northwest and moved to Houston a year ago. I like it but I miss the hills and mountains the west coast has. Houston is soooooooo flat and no hills or mountains. Yes Austin has some hill wich for Texas it is hilly but Austin still can't beat the hills and mountains the west coast has. I miss the roads like highway 101 and windy roads like the grapvine, Texas is just straight and flat.

Imagine LA, without the celebrities, remove the exercise fanatics, tourists, and sushi bars-- keep the smog, the traffic, the crime, raise the temps, up the humidity, waiters are waiters not actors, add more sludge to the beaches, slash real estate prices, increase the number of pot holes, add slightly heavier, yet much nicer people, remove some fair housing and discrimination laws, add smoke filled restaurants, change your pets back to animal status, add a pro football team and that's basically it.

most californians prefer central texas, around the austin area. something about the vibe being very west coast-ish.
houston is a cool city though. strong economy. tons to do. very hot and humid 6 months of the year, but it's not a problem unless you cut lawns for a living.
you will enjoy the change in people for sure. urban texans are practical, sensible, tolerant and friendly. country texans are pure country. either way it's all good.

Yes. I am currently hosting a family of four that just moved from LA. They hated it and are glad to be back in Houston.

Absolutely! I don't know where in Cali you live now, but Texas would love to have you. I was in Cali a few years ago and Texas is a heck of alot cheaper! Our beaches are not as nice, but we do not have a "June Gloom". Come on down...We'll welcome you with open arms!

it depends on what part of california you'd be moving from; the inland empire, bakersfield, fresno... anywhere more than 30 miles from the beach i'd say yeah. but bear this in mind - if you move to texas, you'll be living near texans.
there's probably a reason you can buy a couple acres and palacial house in texas for what a 2 bedroom condo in southern cali goes for.

Houston is a great place to live. Lots of jobs, affordable housing, over 11,000 restaurants, great shopping, museums, NASA, the opera, the theatre, weekend activities and festivals, and many friendly people. Welcome to Houston!
