The NBA Spurs head coach Popovich starts every season with one goal which is to win the championship.

Is Spurs Head Coach Popovich one of the best coaches in NBA history considering that the Spurs have the best winning percentage of any major American sports team franchise over the last 10 yrears, and the Spurs have joined the Lakers, the Celtics, and the Bulls as the only four NBA franchises in NBA history to win at least four NBA titles with all four NBA titles won by the Spurs have been under Coach Popovich in the era of free agency in a small market with limited salary money considering that Coach Popovich built his 1999 championship team in less than two years, rebuilt his 2003 NBA championship in only two years with multiple new starters, rebuilt his 2005 NBA championship Spurs team in only two years with multiple new starters, and, again rebuilt his 2007 NBA championship Spurs team in only two years with two new starters. Who rebuilds teams faster in pro sports history?

i think he is in the top 5. A couple things about Coach Pop: 1)His military background definitely makes him a great leader and he won't take crap from any player. If you're not giving 100% he won't play you, yet, he always gets the best out of his players. 2) He is very good at determining matchups and playing "chess games" with the other team. 3)In a 20pt blow-out he will focus on the things that were done wrong instead of what was done correctly. 4)He is great at managing games. He know when to call time outs when opponents gain any kind of momentum. 5)He is also a very good evaluator of talent. (ex. Parker, Ginobili, Elson, Oberto)

I have to give Pop major props because unlike some of the previous winning coaches (Pat Riley, Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, Lenny Wilkens) who either inherit good teams and thrive in their glory or take over bad teams and vanish into oblivion. Pop was able to win a championship in different eras with a different group of players (besides Duncan). That meant, he had to constantly retrain some of the new players and get them to buy into the concept of his teachings. My hat goes off to Popovich because he has instilled his philosphy on to the team and the players have never wavered from that philosophy.

Yes, it is a testament to Pop's greatness that he can keep a team consistently good despite lots of new players. Granted, he had a great building block in Tim Duncan but it is still hard to see another coach achieving the same results.

I still think that Riley rebuilds teams faster (see Knicks - he rebuilt that team once and see Heat - rebuilt many times), it's just that since the Lakers, he's only won one title.
