Why does Michigan have $0.10 bottle/can deposit refund while other states have $0.05?

I don't know, but if that was here in MA- I would be rich!!
I put a down payment on my home using bottles/cans and a couple of years of tax returns and it only took a couple of years!
Imagine how much faster or larger that deposit would have been with double the amount of recycling material?!!

Because in the 1970's,Michigan was covered in soda cans along highways and the state legislators decided that if the consumers don't return it ;that .05cent is too small a penalty.

I think it is something that is determined state by state. I live in NH, but we dont do bottle refunds but all of our surrounding states do...

I totally agree with gary s.....It's true!! Plus more people will pick them up just for the 10 cent refund. It adds up fast!!
So ~ Less litter...That's a good thing !!
