So far, only the United States, via NASA, has been able to put people on the moon. In the next decade or so, we may see Chinese astronauts on the moon as that is one of the stated goals of the Chinese space program that is doing pretty well so far.

3 countries have been there.
Russia, USA, Japan

Russia technically beat the US according to your question.
you never asked "manned or not." I think.

First probe to crash-land on the Moon was Russia's Luna 2 on 13th Sep 1959.
Russia successfully landed a ship Luna 9 on January 31st 1966
USA landed Surveyor 1 a little later on June 2nd 1966.

Russia's Luna 9 successfully soft landed on the Moon's surface January 31st 1966 and returned the first historical pictures from the Earth's nearest neighbor. Lunas 10, 11, and 12 successfully orbited the Moon returning photographs of potential landing sites. The last probe of 1966, Luna 13, landed on the Moon, took surface photographs, and analyzed soil samples.

All in all, 12 American men have landed on the moon in the period between 1969 and 1972. 12 additional American men have orbited the Moon.

In 1990 Japan visited the moon with the Hiten spacecraft, becoming the third country to orbit the moon. The spacecraft released the Hagormo probe into lunar orbit, but the transmitter failed, thereby preventing further scientific use of the mission.

the Chinese are ready to make the next move this year it looks like. and Germany has made an announcement for plans in 2017

Chinas three-part robotic exploration of the Moon would be wrapped up by 2017. At that time, China will consider a human mission to the Moon, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The private sector in this field does not really exist yet. but these guys won a the first contest to support the growth of the private sector space flight program with their "SpaceShipOne"

No, NASA is the only organization to successfully land people on the moon. Russia tried, but gave up after Neil Armstrong's landing.

No, I don't think so. Russia wanted to get there first, but since it didn't, it stopped spending the money. Russia landed a probe on Venus instead.
