he also said
"life can only be understood backwards but must be lived forwards"

and

one of my personal favorites:
"prayer does not change god but changes him who prays"

interestingly enough, i would never ever attribute anything i read as a "quote" of kierkegaards, because he wrote almost everything he ever put on paper under pseudonyms, usually to poke at other of his pseudonyms or to mock views he found distasteful
so you can't take anything he's quoted as writing as being an opinion of his own --- take em all with giant grains of salt

so why did he say it?
i'm no kierkegaard scholar, and i don't intend to become one! i just think everything he writes is interesting in terms of making me consider why i live my life -- and how...
bringin back the old school philosophical questions

also, his name is pronounced very very oddly in his native language --- "kier - ker - gor" or "Kier - ker - gol" depending on who you ask

Well, a bit bitter reality, don't you think? Ultimately everyone experience old age, disease and death in a variety of ways. And what do we learn? Nothing. We get born again, grow old, get diseased and finally die to be born again and so on.
So, this reality is not very pleasing to be experienced. Actually it is quite unnatural for us living beings who are eternal by nature. Instead of going on to experience the sufferings of material life we should once and for all SOLVE the problems of birth, death, disease and old age. Then we can experience real life.

What he was saying was that we spend far too much time worrying about life and trying to "fix it" instead of just experiencing the reality that has been laid out before us. It's kind of a zen remark. Stop trying to fight life - experience it.

this is my take on the quote -
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body.
Rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, totally worn out, body thoroughly used up and screaming Woo Hoo, What a ride!!!

I DON'T KNOW WHO SAID IT BUT I AGREE WHOLE HEARTEDLY WITH THAT THOUGHT! EVERY STICKY SITUATION BRINGS US A CHANCE TO GROW AND EVEN WHEN THE DIFFICULT TIME HAS FELT LIKE WE COULD BREAK....WHEN ITS OVER WE LOOK BACK- WE SEE HOW IT WAS PART OF OUR OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME BETTER AT AVOIDING THE SAME MISTAKE/EVENT TWICE.
