we voted a union in due to some very bad policies and the fact they are self insured and are not paying any of the medical bills they are supposed ot pay. so far has been a failure as they will not negociate with us in good faith. now the union is saying strike and i do not wish to lose my job( even though it might be a good thing, just hate to see them get away with all the money the employee's paid in), i have always been under the impression that without a signed contract it is a wildcat and we can be terminated, is this true??

If the co cannot make money with a union just being voted in, you should also ask if you can move to Mexico when your job does.

4 years ago, I worked for a co,. which asked for certain concessions from the union. The union refused, so the co just announced, since they could not be profitable, they were closing.
And that's what they did.!!

depends on the policies of the state you are in I'm in right to work state which makes unions a waste of money if the business doesn't want to deal with union they let everyone go that strikes and hire more people. If you company isn't willing to negotiate at all then taking part in a strike will probably end badly. Unless the union has big ties with other groups and can squeeze a company from allot of different directions it won't have the power of the old days. You might see you company close its doors and reopening in Mexico at lower wages and no union problems

If you are in a right to work state, they will just fire the strikers and hire new people. But, if you are not willing to take the union's advice to strike, why did you even bother. I realize that it would be difficult, and you might lose your job, from this information it seems a strike is warranted. This is a question your union rep should be able to answer. This company sounds like a lousy one to work for anyway and if they succeed in scaring or bullying the employees from striking now, it will only become worse.

If the union has just 1 unfair labor charge against the company, you've got them. The international union will probably sanction a strike, which means you get limited pay and insurance from the union. AND with the unfair labor charge against the company, they cannot hire replacement (scab) workers. The only people that will be working are the union workers that cross the picket line.

Even if they strike continue to pay what ever part of your medical coverage you have been paying to keep your policy going and don't say anything to any one. Pay them by returnable check. Also send them a registered lettter telling them you are continueing your policy and make sure you get a returned signature from the company, If they except your payment by sending you back a confermation of continuence then you will be covered no matter what the union does.
