If the second computer is fairly close, use a hub or a network switch. The switch is the better of the two but either will work. You will also need some CAT5 cable. A short one from the modem to the router, a second that is a bit longer to connect to your computer, and a third that is long enough to reach your Daughter's machine.

If the second machine is in another room where it would be inconvenient to reach by cable/hardwire, you would probably want a WIFI router. In this case you would also need to have a WIFI care in at least your Daughter's machine. You should sitll be able to hard wire to your computer from the ports on the WIFI router.

If you decicde to go with "wired", go to one of the local computer repair stores and have them make up the cables that you need. It will be much cheaper then buying them at Office Depot, Staples, etc.

Since you have 2 separate rooms. Buy a wireless router and 2 wireless network cards (I have DLink router and cards and get 108 MBps, if network card and router are not by the same manufacturer you will probably only get 54 MBps). Plug cable modem into router. Install/replace network cards. Conifgure the router and cards and now you have both machines on the same network. The user guide that comes with router and cards will explain it all in detail. It works great for me (just don't forget to enable security).

You'll need to buy a basic Router, either wired or wireless.
Wired ones require you to buy long ethernet cords to reach your other computers, while wireless routers require you to buy wireless cards.
