I have a little piece of software that I use for genealogy to tell me the county associated with a city, and vice-versa. According to this software, there are four different Springfields in Alabama, one each in Arkansas, California, and Colorado, two in Florida, TEN in Georgia, one each in Idaho and Illinois, two in Indiana, one each in Kentucky, Louisiana and Massachusetts, four in Maryland, one in Maine, two in Michigan, one each in Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri, two in North Carolina, one each in Nebraska and New Hampshire, two in New Jersey, one each in New York, Ohio, and Oregon, two in Pennsylvania, three in South Carolina, one each in South Dakota and Tennessee, two in Texas, five in Virginia, and one each in Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. There is also one in the Virgin Islands.
By my count, that makes 62 in the U.S., and one in the Virgin Islands. Glad I don't work for the post office!
