Well, Dragon Ball Z was the first anime I've seen and it was "completely" different than anything else on television. I use to watch mainly cartoons on Nickelodeon like Cat Dog and Rugrats, but when I first saw DBZ it was something that was aspiring: the story, characters, animation, etc.

From what I've read, the anime takes forever in some places because it's based off the manga which was running at the same time, and the anime always caught up to the manga.

To try and prevent this and give Toriyama time to write and draw his stories, some of the battles in the anime are much longer than they are in the manga. The Frieza battle is the biggest culprit in this respect, as it takes around 25 episodes from when Frieza starts fighting to when he finally goes down, whereas in the manga that fight occurs much, much quickly.
