I have a lake pretty much in my backyard; therefore my yard is infested with frogs, lizards, and we even saw a snake while cutting the grass!!! My daughter and I are deathly afraid of these things and I want them gone! I understand that there are positive things that they do....but at night and especially when it rains, I am terrified to go out of my own house!!! Is there any kind of repellent that anyone knows of to keep these things out of my yard? Thanks! (And for the record, I don't particularly want to kill them or get close to them! I just want to be able to walk outside without fear!)

Not really, at least not anything effective. Why not go to a pet shop or something like that, and get to know some of these animals? They are actually harmless, fascinating creatures once you know more about them.

That's what happens when you buy a house near the lake. Short of moving, I don't know of any sure-fire way to get rid of them. Keep your grass mowed. Get rid of any weeds around your house. And if your lake is full of seaweed, you can have it cleaned to dredge up some of that stuff and downplay the attraction it has for those leapin' lizards. If you have shoreline, make sure to keep it raked so everything washing up does not sit and rot. All of that is very attractive to reptiles and will keep them there indefinitely. However, as a lake dweller myself, I can tell you with a certain amount of expertise, you are never going to be completely rid of them.

Your problem is, -THEY live there too! And since you live near a lake- the entire reptile population around that lake is going to be "stopping by to pay you a visit" -sooner or later!!! So if you "can't beat them..."- try THIS: Go to a pet shop with your daughter- and have the manager there familiarize you both- with some of the critters. Maybe if you learn NOT to be afraid of them, you can peacefully "coexist" with your other "neighbors" around the Lake! :)

They are a natural and neccessary part of the eco-system that you chose to live near. You cannot keep animals from their natural habitat without destroying it. A far more practical and healthy option would be to try to deal with your irrational fear of these animals especially for your daughters sake. You can overcome it, I have worked with people with diagnosed clinical reptile phobias and helped them get over it. Go to a store that sells reptiles with your daughter and talk to them about it, have them show you these animals. Gradual exposure will lessen your fear and enable you to enjoy your backyard and the natural beauty that you live near.

As Joseph II said, find out more about these wonderful creatures. You and your daughter can find out about them and then actually see them close up in their natural habitat. Not many of us get to do that. You don't have to handle them, in fact you don't want to, but the more you find out about them perhaps the less fearful you will be. And you will also know what to do when confronted with these creatures.

Oh, and thank you for not wanting to kill them. It is their home too.

Just be happy you don't live in FL , since that's alligator and cottonmouth land I am sure you would have brought that up. You got a house near a lake and I bet your house even cost more because of it. If you don't want to be around such animals live in a city.

Ignorance = Fear... That's all there is to it.

OMG! I want to live there! Do you have big spiders too? 'cause that would make it perfect! Just wear boots when you go out, they are more afraid of you anyway. Next time a snake passes by follow him and see where it's heading, you might learn something.

the only way to really remove the animals you listed is to remove their habitat. and if you do not want to move your only answer is to pave the yard.
