We have the potential energy of the water stored in a reservoir (mostly created by building a dam across a river). The PE is converted to Kinetic Energy when water flows to a lower level through a sluice or pipe etc. The Kinetic energy of water is converted into mechanical energy of a turbine and that in turn is converted into electrical energy by the generator.
How is the river renewed every year? By rains falling in the catchment areas of the reservoir or on hills upstream. And that rain is caused by clouds which precipitate water drops from a height. The clouds in turn are caused by Sunlight falling on the oceans and heating the water and producing water vapor. The oceans are replenished by the rivers running into them. Thus the cycle is complete.

potential energy of up stream or dammed water transformed into kinetic energy by gravity. Kinetic energy used to spin a turbinee. The turbin is a conductor in the presence of a magnetic field. By rotating the conductor a magnetic flux is created and a current is induced in the conductor(Electromagnetic induction). Therefore the kinetic energy is then transferred into electrical.
so: potential-->kinetic-->electrical

Here is is the full story. The sun's rays evaporates water from any source on the surface of the Earth, the water vapour rises to the cooler levels of the atmosphere where it condenses around a speck of dust into tiny droplets which form clouds, the cloud eventually releases the droplets and they fall as rain, a lot of them fall fall onto high ground and pool up into lakes which eventually overflow and run down as rivers, the rivers are dammed to form a reservoir and water is directed to large pipes leading to the blades of turbines, the water pressure spins the turbines which are connected to generators designed to produce electricity.

1...Potential Energy of water in a mountain lake.
2...Kinetic Energy of this water as it is released to flow to the Hydro-power station.
3...KE is converted to Mechanical Energy to drive the water Turbines.
4...Still Mechanical Energy as the shaft from the Turbine drives the Electricity Generator.
5...Mechanical Energy converts to Electrical Energy produced by the Generator.
6...Electrical Energy converted to Heat and light energy for Homes and Industry. Also converted back to Mechanical Energy for driving Motors for Pumps, Compressors, Washing machines, Dryers..etc..and appliances for everyday living.
(I see that someone knows better !!!)

Basic chemistry my dear watson--haha. Well the water of a lake or pool used to current then changes into energy as the water is heated to produce steam and the later cooled to cycle the process all over again. So you atrat with water being heated in a boiler to produce steam and the ateam travels through pipes and later re condenced to make water again. This is how the use of water can make energy and be used over and over as a recycled source
