set it up as ratios
8 foot pole/ 5 ft shadow = ? tree/ 20 ft shadow
multiply both sides by 20 ft and simplify
(8 ft / 5ft ) (20 ft) = (?tree) (20 ft/20ft)
(8 ft) (20/5) = ?tree
(8 ft) (4) = ? tree
32 ft = ? tree
so the tree is 32 ft high

This is a proportion, so set up two fractions. The variable is the height of the pole casting the 20-foot shadow.

8/5 = x/20
Cross multiply.
5x=160
x = 160/5 = 32/1 = 32 feet

Ratios and Proportions is what you need:
8 feet high is to 5 feet long as x feet high is to 20 feet long.
8/5 = x/20
Instead of cross-multiplying, an easier method can be used to solve for x:
Multiply both sides by 20 to isolate x:
(8/5) * 20 = (x/20) * 20
20 crosses out with 5 to create 8 * 4 and 20 crosses out with 20 to create 1:
8 * 4 = x
32 = x
x = 32 feet high.
It's actually really simple.

hey, you didnt specify if the shadows were taken at the same time. cos it all depends on the location of the sun above the pole or the tree.

if the sun is very high up, you need a very TALL tree to produce a shadow of 20 feet.

but if the sun is way low, you need just a SHORT tree to produce a shadow of 20 feet.

Set up as a proportion.
8/5=x/20 Cross multiply.
5x=160 divide both sides by 5
x=32
