A good staple prepared food like pellets should form the backbone of any fishes diet and that includes goldfish. There are other things you can and should feed them as well.

Goldfish are omnivores and require a fairly well balanced diet. About 40% protein, 25% fat and 35% carbohydrate. These should come from a variety of sources to give a proper balance of vitamins, minerals and micro nutrients.

Most any vegetable is good goldfish food assuming you soften it enough for the fish. Green veggies are particularly good.

Sugars are not really needed in a fishes diet and can basically be ignored. They are biologically cheap energy, but the fish will get all the quick energy it needs from the carbohydrates in the veggies.

As for fats and proteins, the best source is from things that grow in freshwater. Cold blooded animals need and store different amino acids than warm blooded animals and therefore things such as insect larvae, aquatic crustaceans and freshwater fish will offer your goldfish the best balance of fats, proteins and amino acids. Beef, chicken and pork should all be avoided if possible in favor of the more digestible and better balanced sources of proteins.

bigheads? Do you mean orandas? Well, to make them grow big and awesome (and survive for that matter) you want a tank that gives them each at least 10 gallons each. I feed mine Hiraka goldfish pellets along with some veggies like frozen peas witout skin, zuccini and lettuce, and I give htem krill that I buy frozen, which breeders say makes their colors come out. As long as you give them a good size tank, with a filter that is strong (I have Penguin hang on back filter and a canister filter that cycle the water in my 50 gallon 500 times an hour -- course mine are babies and it is temporaily overstocked, but what i have is just enough). They should grow fast, because that's what they do if they don't get stunted by a tiny bowl or 10 gallon. Good luck! Have fun, goldfish are awesome!
PS< I dont know about ponds, but goldfish even in big tanks will suffocate without a filter, so definitely use one in a tank.

If you want them to grow them big put them in a good size pond. Not inside a dinky fish bowl of a small fish tank. Don't bother them alot. In food wise let the water stay still so misquitoes can lay their eggs. Fish really like that as their food. If their up to the surface that means that their eating. A filter won't be nescessary the rain will do it for you. When its winter capture them into a well.... a tank. Clean out your pond in the spring and your fish will do ok. The key is the bigger the pond the bigger the fish.

Get a good book and read it FIRST before you do anything. There's a lot to learn about PH balance (one of the most overlooked part and frequently the cause of death.) Make sure you have a good filter system! Goldfish are piggish and make a lot of waste. And DON'T overcrowd. Give them the best variety of food. (most flake is inadequate alone) don't overfeed. They will grow as fast as they will grow but they'll be healthy and they'll live long

your best bet is get them a place as big as possible and keep the water as clean as possible. in tanks where the water is replenished more rapidly fry grow a lot faster -- the science of it hasn't been worked out yet.

Some goldfish just don't grow very big. Just do not put them in places with little space (ie bowls) and don't overfeed them.
