i really want to sing defying gravity for an audition. A lot of people have told me not to because of how well known it is. is there a way I can make the song my own without making it sound too different?

well, I dont know what shows. they will be announced about a month before the auditions i beleive and the auditions arent for awhile. Im making a list of about 6 different songs that are all somewhat different so I can choose one once I find out. I am including these songs

1. in my own little corner
2.adelaides lament
3.part of your world
4.think of me
5.goodnight my someone
6.defying gravity
and a few others
defying gravity is a little different than what im used to, but I am working on it with a voice coach this summer so if I get it really good I want to try it. I included a link to a video of me singing in my own little corner so you might give me some suggestions

where are you auditioning and what for?

generally, though, rent and wicked are way overdone. try going to www.musicalaudition.com -- theres a list of overdone songs. and a lot of tips.

but think of it this way. a million people do defying gravity. and unless you are a million times better than every one of them AND adina menzel, no director will remember your performance. it will just blur into the others. be original. choose something different.

It would help to know what show and role you're auditioning for and what your vocal range is. Add more info and you'll get more help.

The reason people are telling you that it's over done is because it is. If you go in with that song, the director has likely heard it from several other people and you will be utterly forgettable. He's likely to have a notepad where instead of taking notes, he's drawn Elphaba with a noose around her neck singing the song... they're sick of hearing it. Singing anything that is from a musical that is currently a big hit is not a good idea.

If you're the same girl that's auditioning for the company that is auditioning for all 5 shows at once, can you list the shows? Many of us can tell you what roles, if any, you could be right for if you give us a basic description of yourself, your abilities, etc.
