Yes. They are hidden under hard covers, which is what you see. The slit down the beetle's back is where the covers separate, and they are hinged at the top.

Haven't you ever had one fly right into your head and get caught up in your hair? Freaks me out everytime...they must be like bats and use sonar or something....regardless, they seem like very dumb insects to me, always running into things! :)
