If you live in California, UCs (especially Berkeley, L.A, and San Diego) are more prestigious than most private schools in the nation.

If you live out of California the state school system is a waste of time and money, and if you can get into a decent private school, do it.

I've got a degree from both, undergrad from a state school and a masters from a private school.
It depends on what you are looking for in a college. A state school tends to be larger with more social activities. More members of the opposite sex doesn't hurt either. Of course it has the football atmosphere. At least some do. The education you receive depends on your field of study. Most liberal arts majors are sort of mass produced (like GM autos). Most state schools have at least one or two prestigious areas of study like Law or Medicine they like to brag about. Also, engineering, pharmacy and the like.
Private school probably offers a better eduction because they are usually smaller and have less distractions. Of course, you will pay more for tuition. My experience is private schools provide a better atmosphere for learning than state schools but they are often sort of dull.
You can get a good education at either a state or private school. After all, you do the work. The school just provides the opportunity.

state universities are usually much larger and offer a larger variety of majors. state universities will have larger classes. state universities will have a lot of sports and a huge variety of people that you can meet. private colleges have much smaller campuses. private colleges usually offer smaller classes so you can actually get to know your teacher. there are many advantages and disadvantages. What you should really do is find out what you might want to major in (or a few things) and find a college/university that offers that major and make sure it is a good program.

I, personally, am aiming at getting into UT (university of texas) which is i think the hardest sate university to get into. I have also looked at many private colleges, but I think I want to go to a larger university/college so that I can have more options and be with a diverse variety of people.

I know this is trite, but compair apples to oranges. Criteria #1 which has the best curriculum in your area of study. #2 which offers the best extracurricular activities such as sports you might want to be active in? Though I agree with all earlier answers, you might want to look into a local-area college if credits are transferable because they are cost-effective and for the first couple of years, you won't be spending much of your time in study for a major. You have to get the prerequisites out of the way first. As for the difference between the two, it all depends on how they rate on the scale of academic standards. One thing is for sure, you will probably have to pay more $$ going private than state.

Private colleges are, of course, privately funded. They tend to be much more expensive than state schools, which, for many, can be a disadvantage. They also tend to have smaller student populations, which may or may not be an advantage, depending on what the student is looking for. Many private universities are religiously affiliated, such as Notre Dame (Catholic) in South Bend, Indiana or Union (Baptist) in Jackson, Tennessee. A religious affiliation will often mean restrictions on what students can and can't do (such as consumption of alcohol and even sex).

State universities are usually less expensive and have larger student populations. This can typically mean a more diverse student body (of course depending on the location of the school) and more to offer in terms of classes, concentrations and activities.

In terms of how good a school is academically, it really depends on the institution and the concentration. Of course, many of the best schools in this nation are private institutions, such as Harvard. There are, however, a large number of excellent state schools, such as University of Michigan and Penn State. Also, specific programs at certain state schools may be better than you can find almost anywhere else, such as music at Indiana University.

In considering state versus private schools, it is important to look at cost, any religious affiliation a private school may have and the quality of the programs at that school. Neither is necessarily better than the other.

It is really all about location, finances, and your credentials. Where is it that you want to be? What schools are in that area? How much can you/your parents afford? (Don't get bogged down with tons of student loans. Cheaper really is sometimes better.) What scores/grades do you have? Check the criteria for the schools that you are interested in attending. Make sure your scores will be accepted. Send off for college brochures and visit their websites. Go and visit these campuses. You will know once you step on the campus whether or not it is the school for you.

the question is which college or university offers the better, more respected degree in the field you want to work in.

private colleges tend to cost more because they get less state subsidies. However many state universities offer outstanding degree programs.

I can tell you when I hire people, a degree from well respected school carries a lot of weight.

State universities are more respectable, and private colleges are good for brushing up on your skills. Within state universities you do various courses and alot of employers like that.
