Bill Mueller, still on the payroll at $4.5 million, instead is in his first year as special assistant to general manager Ned Colletti. Mueller was forced to retire by chronic knee problems that sidelined him early last year and led to the acquisition of Wilson Betemit, whose struggles this year led to the promotion of Andy LaRoche.

Won the batting title in Boston, then faded into the sunset...

I remember the rout the Sox had against the Marlins (the yr they won the World Series no less) where Mueller hit 2 grand slams in 1 game from BOTH sides of the plate. Amazing.

He retired and now I think he is a special assistant to the GM of the Dodgers.

Not sure i lost track of him after he left Boston I think he retired.
