They have developed UAV's with electronics to detect the IEDs and to destroy them.

The military may not be the swiftest at solving problems... but they do work to keep the soldiers alive. Thats why we've only lost appx 3500 troops... to somewhere on the order of 200,000 dead "insurgents."
