First of all in response to the comment of attacks on American soil... how many attacks have we had on our soil period? Do not glorify an administration which is more well-known for ineptitude when it takes an attack of epic proportions which could have been to get them to pay attention.
But to answer the question, the reason was to bring down the terrorist network that was responsible for the attacks. To not take any action would have shown that we are easy prey.

What happened out there with Afghanistan and Iraq was mostly done unconciously and not on purpose.
That got everyone at loss and blurr with the real thing that is going on out there.

Then realised the mess was created by our creator who caught us off guard out there.

Because the Taliban were giving Bin Laden sanctuary- after 9/11. Well, it SEEMED like a good idea- at the time...

Terrorists....or perhaps to rid the world of a radical muslim state that was sponsoring it. Either way we've not had an attack on our soil since then.

We actually didn't attack Afghanistan. We are after the Taliban that are there. One of our main goals was to capture Osama Bin Ladin. So, we did not attack the country.

Because that's where OBL was given protection. Before we attacked, we asked them to hand him over but they refused.
