The war is complex and very difficult - but the bottom line is simple: We either win or we submit to their demands. There is absolutely no way we can ever secure our country from the whims of terrorists and remain with any semblance of security, individual rights or freedoms.
We will not need to kill all of the terrorists any more than the allied forces needed to kill all of the Nazis during WWII. Unfortunately, one thing is for sure - we will never win if we can't unite in our effort and fight this war with the same resolve and commitment that the terrorists have repeatedly demonstrated.

I am a US soldier currently serving in Iraq. We don't have to secure the whole country. the problem is where kurds, Shiia, and Sunni live together. Most parts of Iraq are controlled by each group individually. what would stop insurgents from occupying all these areas?, Iraq is controlled by clans and tribes. What Clan or tribe you come from is even more important than if you are Sunni or Shiia. an outsider just can't go into a new area and set up camp. That is not how it works here. Everything is done on a very local level with tribal elders. Our biggest hurdle is getting all these groups to live with eachother and to stop the retalitory violence.

They can't win the war because the majority of the insurgency is made up of average citizens defending the homeland. Remember Vietnam? Well, this is just a replay, middle east style.
"Don't the terrorists/Al Qaeda just have to go to the areas of Iraq where there aren't any (or many) US troops & use them as sanctuaries?"
And that's exactly what they're doing.

You don't get it, the Iraqi army was controlled by the Sunnis. Saddam decided it was time to run away and hide, the shite soldiers deserted, the Sunni soldiers took off their uniforms and disguised themselves as civilians, and vowed to go on fighting the war until we gave up, but kept their plan a secret ( a good soldier never lets the enemy know what is going on )
On inauguration day 2009 I'm ordering all our guys to come home. Then the shite will hit the fan in Iraq, but that will be a problem the democrat who takes my job will have to deal with, I'm going down to Mexico to live with my amigos.

Nothingusefull, you're putting the cart in the previous the pony. you could no longer optimistic up the Iraqi government if there is an countless bypass of materials entering the theater to end you and result your venture. The poster is right. in case you do no longer look after the borders then there is not any way of triumphing this conflict as a results of fact the enemy has geographical and numerical superioity. this is quite in simple terms easy experience and intensely uncomplicated ,protection rigidity methods,

It's worse than that. The U.S. military has now started to arm Sunni insurgents (I really wish I was kidding) in the hope they will fight al-qaeda in certain areas.
Bush is just riding out his term hoping to make this somebody else's problem.

That is the fundamental flaw in the neocon argument for "victory" - it's simply impossible. And they claim to be "realists".
