1) The correct answer is false. The Earth is actually closer to the sun in January, and farthest from the sun in July. It's not the distance from the sun that causes the seasons, but the Earth's position relative to the sun.

The Earth is tilted on its axis at a 23.5-degree angle. In the summer, even though we're slightly farther from the sun, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted so the sun's rays hit it more directly than they do in the wintertime. Just as it's hotter in the middle of the day when the sun is directly overhead, it's hotter in the summertime when the sun is directly over the Northern Hemisphere. The Earth's tilt is also why the seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.
