By modern rock, do you mean bands that are still playing today and are at least somewhat popular, or bands that have either recently come into popularity or recently started? Whatever, I'll just go by whatever you're thinking and not put guitarists from the better times of music. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine is pretty good. Not that I like the band in particular, since I don't really like rapcore, but he's one of the better guitarists nowadays. Daron Malakian of System of a Down isn't bad either. But I don't like the band in particular either, mainly because the constant screaming hurts my ears. John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers is great. He actually gets guitar solos, although relatively short ones, but his skills are pretty good. The people that have influenced him though are kinda lesser-known though. My favorite song by RHCP is Otherside. And if you could call him modern, Buckethead is very good as well. Most of his guitar solos are pretty good; I can't pick one out of the batch.

it has always been TOM MORELLO from AUDIOSLAVE....

In 1988 Morello joined Lock Up, a glam rock band that released one album through Geffen Records before splitting up. This record was called Something Bitchin' This Way Comes, which enjoyed only slight success at the time.

Morello had been crushed by the lack of success he experienced in Lock Up. He visited a club in Los Angeles where Zack de la Rocha was rapping. After viewing de la Rocha's lyric books, Tom asked him to front a band. Morello drafted Brad Wilk, a drummer who had unsuccessfully auditioned for Lock Up, and de la Rocha introduced the two to his friend Tim Commerford. The four formed a new band, Rage Against the Machine.

After de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine, the remaining bandmates started jamming with former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell at the suggestion of producer Rick Rubin. The new group was first called Civilian, but changed their name to Audioslave before their first album was released.

Morello is less known for his folk music, which he plays under the alias The Nightwatchman.

Morello is famed for his guitar style, which consists of punk/funk hybrid riffs and hip hop-inspired sounds. His guitar playing is also characterized by heavy use of guitar effects, such as delay, modulation, wah, harmonizers, distortion, pitch shifters, feedback, and others in unique ways and combinations.

Tom Morello hands down.

He's most known for his work with Rage Against the Machine, and Audioslave. Now he has a solo career under the alter-ego, "The Nightwatchman." IMHO, with all the different sounds that he gets out of his guitar, he's kinda like the Hendrix of his generation.

Favorite solo by him for me would have to be "Killing in the Name"

Gitarist: He's not really a 'rock' musician, but John mayer for sure. He's got such a great style and he's amazingly talented too.
Song: Split Screen Sadness (Heavier Things album)
Solo: Covered in Rain (Any Given Thursday DVD)

Well I have a tie between two guitarist. One from back in the day one from the now. Slash is my favorite back in the day guitarist. But the awesomest guitarist has to be Synister Gates of Avenged Sevenfold he totally rocks and is Guitar God of modern metal.

John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers
I love the way he can mix funk and traditional rock melodies and riffs to create his distinct signature. His musicianship is highly intricate and excellent.

My favorite stuff by him is the work he did on BloodSugarSexMagik and Californication, his solo stuff is also great.

Andrew Stockdale - Wolfmother and he is not my favorite but I like him because he plays original guitar solos, they are very simple but are just simply great
p.s.: my favorite is Kirk Hammette - Metallica but I dont know if u would consider him or them as modern rock.
