Respect comes from each individual and it is based on their personal beliefs and values. They most likely learned their beliefs and values from their parents. People respect others based on those beliefs and it varies widely. Some people respect the Democrats and some respect the Repubicans. Some people respect pro-choice followers and some folks respects pro-life followers. It's all a matter of personal beliefs and values. It really has little to do with other people. Even criminals are respected by certain folks.

In order to respect others one has to have a secure sense of self. Sometimes people who are dis-respected have not exhibited any towards others and have not earned it.
