The Universe is defined as the summation of all particles and energy that exist and the space-time in which all events occur. Based on observations of the portion of the universe that is observable, physicists attempt to describe the whole of space-time, including all matter and energy and events which occur, as a single system corresponding to a mathematical model.

The universe is to us what the ocean is to sea life. Sea life has no concept of what exists outside of the water -- save for a few amphibians. We have no concept (yet) of what exists outside of the universe. We may become amphibians and be able to cross out of the universe.

Just as a frog may be able to live in both worlds, we may come to a point where we can live in and out of the universe.
