the Internet like nearly everything besides a telephone and including it utilizes a fiber optic cable within it.that all said and done when a line goes down in the network which could be anywhere within hundreds of miles it directly affects everyone on it that uses the optic cable.Yes it has happened to me as far away as 500 miles away, line goes down if affects many networks using it.my line was an AT &T line when it was cut into entires states and outlying areas were disconnected for over an hour so you got off easy however when this happens the crews work on it as fast as they can to restore everyones connection

I live in the east midlands and mine was playing up yesterday, being very slow or not connecting to sites. The diag light on my hub kept flashing which meant a broken link. Very anoying but fine now. Maybe the weather was responsible.
