They're called "contractions." And "they're" is also one!!

Words like this are called contractions. The apostrophe stands in symbolically for the deleted letters: in the case of these words the deleted letters are all o.

Contractions would be the proper term.
Psychologists would say they're words to erase out of your vocabulary permanently.

I voted for socalmal's lame excuse answer.

The English professor chick2lit ended her sentence with a preposition but called it a conjunction. That's 2 strikes for her. I hope her students don't recognize her Avatar. :>D

they are called contractions, i use to not know to, but i asked my teacher and she told me, they are words that turns the o in not into a '. i won't go= i will not go

unless you mean 'modal' verbs, because they modulate the main verb (in 'you can't do that' can't modulates the verb do). Can, should, would, may, might, will, shall are modal verbs.
