Europeans, in the Colonial period, "owned" most of Africa, most of the Americas (including the US before 1776) Australia and most of Asia (particularly if you regard Siberia as a colony of European Russia.)

They did not "own" Ethiopia (Abyssinia), Thailand (Siam) and China.

no the kings and royals owned everything and the people were allowed to live on the lands and work and pay taxes to the royals...and whatever the royals said, or whated was done...if not then their heads would roll on by...
