If you don't know what it is or what it does, you do not need one.

A modem connects you to the internet by turning your PC into a glorified telephone. It works, but it is very slow.

If you have other options to connect to the internet, I would not buy a modem.

If you have some OTHER means of getting online, such as WiFi, I don't see why not.
