I prefer plastic because roaches can come with the paper bags. Also, I find it easier to carry plastic than paper, and since I carry the plastic back and put it in the recycle bin at the front of the store, I've done my part. (A lot of times I take a wheeled handcart and select my groceries and then put them in the cart and don't use bags at all. When gas prices fall, I'll stop walking with the cart.)

It doesn't matter much for it's just plastic anymore..I used to work in a grocery store as a bagger 14-15 years ago and found for most items paper is the best..it's when you put frozen or wet items in a bag you need plastic. I think stores should give the customer the option. I could also see some viewpoints for using a mesh bag that you keep. Why not..you'd just have to remember to bring'em with you..I do good to remember my list.

Plastic. They are both bad in some way, so I might as well for for the convenient one. Plus, paper bags sometimes need twice as many bags as plastic.

Paper, for those reasons, and because I had a bad experience with a plastic bag once...
I was trying to carry a plastic bag with a jar of tomato sauce in it, but the handle broke randomly and it fell and smashed itself on the ground. It was awful.

you see the plastic bags everywhere in the yards, streets in trees so its stands to reason that they don't biodegrade so paper should be better... i miss the paper but plastic holds the groceries better... the paper bags you could reuse too. and if you left them in the rain they would biodegrade... paper you can use to bring your lunch or for crafts,,,plastic is a good tool for carrying........

During the winter months we use paper so we can use it for the fire place. In the summer we use plastic and reuse them as trash bags for small trash cans.

I prefer paper but my grocery store only uses plastic.
I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy cloth bags.
