OK now...
we started with 5 (five)
and we're given that whatever-it-is is added to 2 (two) and you come up with 5 (five)
we can say the same thing an easier way...
5 (five) minus 2 (two) is whatever-it-is
even if the squareroot of 9 (nine) isn't intuitively obvious, we just solved for the whatever-it-is
you gotta conclude that 3 (three) is the squareroot of 9 (nine)
it's also a great way to double-check whether an answer you arrived at a different way--like the other answerers solved for--makes any kind of sense...
don't be discouraged...in Math you can always come at something from either end...if you don't get there the 1st time you try, you can always come at it from the other direction...
