Try him on some bloodworms to see if that will get him eating properly again.

What you are seeing when you hold the mirror to his bowl is called flaring. He does that to try to scare away the other betta. It's ok to do this every once in a while, but not too often and not long when you do, it can become stressful for the fish.

most bettas hate flakes, but they usually eat pellets. try blood worms, frozen, freeze dried, or live.

however, how long have you had him and what are you keeping him in? a new home can make fish nervous for a few days, he may not eat for the first week your have him. also, bettas in unfiltered and unheated bowls or tanks don't fair as well as bettas in a heated and filtered tank, they get cold and weak and don't eat much. betta water should be around 80°F. getting a small filtered tank means little to no more full water changes.

when you hold a mirror up your betta flares because he thinks it's another betta, he has to look big and mean so he can scare it away. only do this for 10-20mins a day. too much will stress the betta.

Some betta are picky about food...give him some time, make sure you don't over feed. The foofing up is called flaring and is perfectly normal for a betta. It's his way of looking tough to intimidate other betta or show off for the ladies. He thinks his reflection is another betta challenging his territory.

Blood worms, and dried shrimp, too...I have a betta fish as well. They're so beautiful, aren't they? Maybe you weren't feeding your other one enough...I'm not sure. I hope this helps; though, and that this fish survives! And I'm sorry about your last 6 fish. Well try my suggestions. I hope this helps! =D L

in the wild bettas eat live food -- i found pushing the food around like its a drowning bug makes them go for it -- you have to push it a while to get his attention and you might have to push it for a while before he actually eats it. but after doing that a few times they realize pellets are food.

you can rub garlic on it too -- for some reason the smell of garlic makes most animals like their food better -- even fish.
