My laptop startup is very slow, takes about 10-20 minutes to load. However, I have already defragged, disk cleaned, full Norton 2007 virus scan, Spybot, AutoRun, removed some unwanted startup items at the statup tab and it is still very slow. Also, at times I cannot even start it up - I just see a black screen when I press the power button, but the laptop is 'on' because I hear the harddrive whir. I run on Winodws XP, 80GB harddrive, 512MB. What is the problem?

I've never heard a laptop starting up so slow....what processor is your laptop? It could be the processor, like pentium4 or celeronM or the latest models from intel>>Core 2 Duo. If the processor is slow then that's the problem. If you want to fix that, take it to a computer repair shop and ask for a processor upgrade. (1.6ghz and up are perfect).

I had some problems on my laptop too. The programs i run on it load up very very slow. So, one day i decided to factory restore everything. And what do you know, it ran faster. You can try factory restore before spending any money on it.

Hello,

Try going into msconfig and disable everything and add programs one at a time until gets slow..
Also, those unwanted start up programs i suggest you F8 and get to the command prompt and delete the file from their locations> then go back in windows and start Regedit and find and delete any associations to those unwanted programs..
You might want to run sfc/scannow to see if any windows files were corrupted..

might be that you don't have enough RAM or that you have to many programs that start with windows there are a lot of different reasons I would try restoring windows or get it looked at by a computer repair shop and I only use windows firewall and I've never had virus problems and my computer works great
