My friend doesn't beleive me! She always uses "Carmen Electra"as an example. I'm serious, Carmen is a name for both of the genders. Right?!

And no, of course I would never name a child Carmen. That would suck for him, and he'd hate me forever.

I am not pregnant. I'm just trying to settle this dispute with my friend. Sorry I just put this question under "Parenting and Pregnancy/ Baby Names" 'cause it's the only place that seemed appropriate.

Carmen started out as a male name, but was co-opted by girls. This has happened more than once. For example, Ashley and Robin started out as boy names.

I would say to SLAM on the breaks for naming a boy Carmen. (Now there is a singer named Carman). I would definitely say slam on the breaks using such a name with either spelling as it is more feminine and can be cause for teasing and the like. If you must... for the sake of the child make it a middle name... so at least it's hidden. I would say to give your friend the ten points or a high five by conceding that it's not kosher. Do the child right... think how it'll affect him... or her.

i have only ever me tor heard of females named Carmen. i guess it is but why put a child through it it is a mainly female name so just go with something else.

ok i just looked it up on the social security site in the year 2006 it was the number 258 for females and in the past 15 years has not been in the top 1000 for male names.

You can also try telling your friend that Carmen Electra is made-up name. Her real name is Tara Patrick.

Yes you are right. Well most of the Carmens i've heard of have been hispanic males. But now-a-days its used more for females.

It's a name for both genders... carmen, the gospel singer... etc.

Yes it can. In Spanish cultures, it can be a man's name. There is even a man named Carmen where I work.

BUT.... I don't think its a good choice for male children these days.
