Is the concept of Davy Jones cutting out his heart and living forever folklore / mythology or was it made up by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies? Can anyone direct me to learn more about Davy Jones somewhere other than Wikipedia?

Davy Jones Locker is just a different name for the bottom of the sea. Pirates made up the piece about the heart.

The concept of Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean is unique to that movie. In reality, Davy Jones was a nickname for the devil. In the same vein, the names "Nicholas" and "Scratch" were also nicknames for the devil.

Davy Jones locker became a metaphor for the bottom of the sea somewhere in the 1700's. It was said to be where dead pirates ended up.

Check into the legand of Pirates in the Carribean. Maybe google it. Also google Davy Jones.
I think they took off on legend. I have heard of books on Davy Jones. So I am quite sure the movie took the legand and put it in their movie to make it more realistic.
Worked didn't it.

Interesting. I agree with one of the answers above, which mentions the locket - so nothing like you suggested would happen. I believe, however, that it's not necessary for the one who stabs the heart to actually want it - remember, in the movie, Will was pretty much dead already when Jack hold his hand and made him stab the heart. In this sense, I believe that whoever fired the cannon, even if it was by accident, was the one responsable. You can always track it back to someone and, besides, the Dutchman must ALWAYS have a captain, ne.

Davy Jones? Are the Monkees getting back together? I don't think Mike will go along with that. Mickey and Peter might, but not Mike.

PS: I think the movie part is made up, for the most part.
