When men run for President, they make various claims and promises that they say they will do, when they are elected.

Has anyone ever compared the CLAIMS of men who became President, to actual ACCOMPLISHMENTS they have done, to see if 1, or more, actually DID what they said they would do, when they became elected?

And, how far back have men who were running for President, went around making claims and promises to win an election?

Presidents have platforms on which they campagin during the election process inwhich they outline their goals if and when they become elected.

However, in order for many of their platforms to become laws, programs ect, they must be pasted by Congress. If you have a president of one party and a congress of another, many things become unrealised. This however, does not change the claims that many president elects make to win over the votes. Sometimes they claim that they are for something that they really aren't and only state that they are because its popular with the voting public.

All elected officials, from the begining of democracy ( not just American but world wide) have made claims and promises to win elections. Some really belive that they would be able to accomplish these platforms but aren't able to and some never even get the ball rolling on their platforms.

I don't know the exact answer, but it goes back to roughly the end of the 19th Century. Prior to that, it was considered undignified to actually campaign for the presidency. Nominees stayed at home where they met various delegation which traveled to them, and expressed positions on public issues in letters which were published in their parties' newspapers.

yes. most history books compare what they promised to what they did, or you should be able to find out by reading any detailed book about a president of your choosing
look at Polk for example, he did most of what he promised and left after just one term because he accomplished his goals

and since the first election

Election promises have been around since the very first election. However it would sure be nice if politicians would be more honest. But then again the general populace isn't very honest either.
