The book is excellent, I think it will help you "get it".

I have read the book twice and also saw the movie and there's NO comparison...the book is so much better. You get alot more of an indepth look at the characters when you read an entire book than in a two hour movie where they had to cut major parts out to make it fit into the time allowed. I really liked that book and also the other that goes along with it called "Little Altars Everywhere".

I think the book was better than the movie, but the film itself was actually good. It just was a "cleaner" version of the book because it left out very explicit parts of the novel. for example in the novel Vivi is more flawed and "broken" emotionally in the novel than the movie ever reveals. And we can see this through the eyes/narration of her children. So read the novel first, and for the heck of it, to get the physical representation, watch the movie. But judge the movie as a FILM not as an adaptation of a book before raising pitchforks about its un-authenticity. That's what kills the thrill about many good movies.

I agree that the book is almost always better than the movie. The movie always leaves a lot out of it due to time constraints. If you liked the movie and you enjoy reading I would read the book.

See, I haven't read it yet, I read Little Alters Everywhere, which is about Vivi and her family. Read that book and you won't love Vivi so much.
