It's an illusion. It may look like the dunker stays in the air much longer than the defending players, but he really doesn't.

The difference is that the defending players jump straight up and down, while the attacker is jumping forward. They all have equal amounts of air time (assuming they jump equally high), but the attacker's forward motion makes it look like he's in the air longer.

I guess it looks like that. The jumper must stop before he can change direction.
