probably because they are scared that something bad will happen to their children if they don't monitor it in the right way. have you watched dateline's sexual predators on tv? i'm an adult with a "family" myspace page and i wouldn't let my children have their own page unless i knew for sure i could monitor them all the time.

Hello:
Speaking for myself, as I've become older, sharing information in that way is not important to me. I grew up with computers, but my world of computers was completely different than it is now. In my teen and young adult experience, we had bulletin boards that we "lived on."
I do not hate myspace, but I don't identify with it the way some of you probably do because I'm not interested in sharing myself in that way. I would have been when I was a teen, but today I prefer the reality of human-to-human relationships and sharing. A virtual community has less draw to me simply because it is partially fantasy. While you /do/ in fact interact with people, is is only partially real. The majority of the interaction is purely conceptual- you see and read only what someone else wants you to see. You do not see the /whole/ person. Maybe that feels safe, but to me it's false, fantasy. Does that mean I distrust the concept in general, as one person suggested? Yes, I suppose it does have something to do with it. Relationships in the real world do not work the way they do in virtual communities, and I prefer to spend the majority of my time in real human relationships building into one another's lives.
The older I get, the more important real, tangible, touchable relationships have become. However, I do have a mostly ignored LJ account and maintain a Web site just for the purposes of telling friends and family what's going on in my geekly life . I guess that means I do identify with it a little bit. :-)
I hope that helps.
Cheers!
